Is this RIDDOR reportable? Free RIDDOR checker

Answer a few questions about an accident, an illness or a near miss. You will see whether it must be reported to HSE under RIDDOR, who reports it and by when, with a link to the regulation each answer comes from.

Is it reportable?

Answer the questions about what happened. Your answers stay in your browser. Nothing you choose is sent to us.

What happened?

If someone was hurt and something dangerous also happened, such as a scaffold collapse, check the injury first, then start again for the dangerous occurrence.

Answer every question to see whether it is reportable.

This tool covers Great Britain under RIDDOR 2013. Northern Ireland has its own RIDDOR (Northern Ireland) 1997 regulations, with different thresholds; see HSENI’s accident reporting guidance if that is where it happened. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

What is reportable, and by when

RIDDOR only covers accidents connected with work, and only these kinds of event. The deadlines run from the date of the accident or incident, not from when you find out it is reportable.

What happenedWhen it countsDeadline
A deathAnyone who dies as a result of a work-related accident.Tell HSE without delay. Report within 10 days. (RIDDOR reg 6 and Sch 1 para 1)
A specified injury to a workerOne of the injuries listed in regulation 4(1), such as a fracture other than to a finger, thumb or toe.Tell HSE without delay. Report within 10 days. (RIDDOR reg 4(1) and Sch 1 para 1)
An over-7-day injury to a workerThe worker cannot do their normal work for more than 7 days in a row, not counting the day of the accident.Report within 15 days of the accident. (RIDDOR reg 4(2))
An injury to someone not at workThey are taken from the scene to hospital for treatment of the injury.Tell HSE without delay. Report within 10 days. (RIDDOR reg 5 and Sch 1 para 1)
An occupational diseaseA doctor diagnoses one of the conditions in regulation 8, such as HAVS or occupational dermatitis, and the work involves the linked activity.Report without delay once you have the diagnosis. (RIDDOR reg 8 and Sch 1 para 2)
A dangerous occurrenceOne of the events listed in Schedule 2, such as a scaffold collapse, even if nobody was hurt.Tell HSE without delay. Report within 10 days. (RIDDOR reg 7 and Sch 2)
An over-3-day injury to a workerThe worker cannot do their normal work for more than 3 days in a row, but not more than 7.Not reported. Record it and keep the record for three years. (RIDDOR reg 12(1)(c) and (2))

Report online through HSE’s RIDDOR reporting page. For a death, or a specified injury to a worker, you can phone HSE instead. Keep a record of every reportable incident for at least three years.

If you are self-employed

Being self-employed does not take you outside RIDDOR. Who sends the report depends on where it happened. If you are injured on a site another business controls, that business reports it, so make sure they know. If it happens on your own premises or in someone’s home where you are running the work, or a doctor diagnoses you with a reportable disease, you report it yourself.

Read the full rules in RIDDOR if you are self-employed, and who is exempt from reporting under RIDDOR.
