What's the quickest way to control construction dust on a small site?

To control construction dust on a small site, keep it out of the air in the first place. Use water suppression when cutting, fit an on-tool extractor to your cutting kit, work outdoors or in a ventilated space where you can, and wear an FFP3 mask when nothing else brings the level down. Dust from silica, wood and hardwood isn't just a nuisance — it causes lung disease that can kill years down the line.

Most small builders already own half the kit they need. The problem is habit. This guide covers the practical steps for domestic and light commercial jobs, plus how to write it up so it holds together on paper.

Why dust matters more than most trades think

Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) is the big one. It's in concrete, mortar, brick, block, sandstone and tiles. Cut, grind or drill any of those dry and you release a cloud of particles too fine to see but easily deep enough to lodge in your lungs. Long-term exposure causes silicosis, lung cancer and COPD.

Wood dust is the other common hazard, especially hardwoods like oak and beech. Softwood and MDF cause problems too — MDF is loaded with resins and fine particles. Chasing a wall for cables, cutting paving, sanding floors, dry-cutting roof tiles: these all put dust in the air fast.

A sole trader chopping into a chimney breast without suppression can hit exposure levels many times the legal limit in minutes. You won't feel it that day. You'll feel it in twenty years.

What are the three main ways to control construction dust?

The HSE talks about a hierarchy, and it works for small jobs just as well as big ones. Tackle them in order.

1. Stop the dust at source — water suppression

Water damps down dust before it goes airborne. A wet-cut disc cutter, a diamond blade fed with water, or even a hose held on a cut line makes a huge difference.

  • Cutting paving or kerbs? Use a petrol saw with a water bottle attachment or a mains feed.

  • Cutting tiles? A wet tile saw beats a dry angle grinder every time.

  • Chasing brick? A wall chaser with water suppression, not a dry grinder.

Just enough water to stop the dust — you're not trying to flood the job.

2. Capture it — on-tool extraction

An M-class or H-class vacuum bolted to the tool sucks dust away as it's created. This is the go-to for indoor work where water makes a mess.

  • Wall chaser plus M-class extractor for socket runs.

  • Random orbital sander with dust port and extractor for floor prep.

  • Drilling into concrete with a hollow SDS bit connected to a vac.

An ordinary workshop hoover won't do. Standard vacs blow the fine dust straight back out. You need an M-class (medium hazard) or H-class (high hazard) unit rated for construction dust.

3. Protect the person — RPE and ventilation

Masks are the last line, not the first. A well-fitted FFP3 disposable or a reusable half mask with P3 filters protects you when suppression and extraction can't get the level low enough — cutting in a tight kitchen, for example.

RPE only works if it seals. That means face-fit testing and no beard where the mask sits. A £2 nuisance dust mask from the merchant does nothing against silica.

Practical dust control for common small jobs

Kitchen fitters

Cutting worktops, drilling tiles, chasing for sockets. Cut worktops outside with extraction on the jigsaw or router. Drill tiles wet or with a vac attached. Keep the customer's furniture sheeted and the room ventilated.

Electricians

Chasing walls is the killer here. A wall chaser with M-class extraction cuts a clean channel and keeps 90% of the dust out of the air. Sweeping up afterwards with the same vac beats a broom, which just throws it back up.

Roofers

Dry-cutting concrete or clay tiles on the deck fills the air fast. Cut tiles wet on the ground, or use a guillotine where you can. Position yourself upwind and keep others clear of the cutting station.

Groundworkers

Cutting kerbs, slabs and blocks all day is heavy silica exposure. Water-fed saws are non-negotiable. On a dry, dusty site, damp down access routes so tyres and boots don't kick up more.

Plumbers

Coring through walls and drilling into masonry. Wet core bits or a vac-connected drill, and clear the debris as you go rather than letting it dry and get walked through the house.

How do you write dust control into your paperwork?

Controlling dust isn't only about the kit — you're expected to show you've thought it through and told your workers. For most domestic and light commercial jobs that means putting it in your risk assessment and, where you handle substances, a COSHH assessment.

Your RAMS should name the dust hazard, the task that creates it, and the specific controls: water suppression, M-class extraction, FFP3 masks, ventilation, and clean-up. Generic "wear a mask" wording won't cut it. If you're cutting paving, say so, and say how you're keeping the dust down.

What does good site housekeeping look like?

Control doesn't stop when the cutting does. Settled dust gets disturbed and goes airborne again.

  • Vacuum with an M-class unit, never dry sweep. Sweeping is one of the worst things you can do.

  • Damp down debris before shovelling it into skips or bags.

  • Bag up waste tiles, offcuts and rubble rather than letting them dry and crumble.

  • Clean tools and clothing before you take them home — you don't want silica in the van and on the sofa.

  • Ventilate the workspace during and after dusty tasks.

On a domestic job this matters twice over, because the customer and their family are breathing the same air. Sheeting off a work area with poly and keeping doors shut stops dust spreading through the house.

Quick checklist before you start a dusty task

  1. Can I avoid the dust altogether? Order pre-cut materials, or cut off-site.

  2. Can I use water suppression? If yes, set it up.

  3. If not water, can I fit on-tool extraction with an M-class vac?

  4. Do I have a face-fit-tested FFP3 mask for the residual dust?

  5. Is the area ventilated and are others kept clear?

  6. Have I written the controls into my RAMS or COSHH assessment?

  7. Do I have a clean-up plan that isn't a broom?
