Battering means cutting the sides of an excavation back to a slope. Stepping, also called benching, creates horizontal benches between faces. Either approach may help control collapse risk when the profile suits the ground and the work.
Choose the method before excavation starts. Ground conditions, water, nearby structures, loads at the edge and available space all matter. Where a suitable battered or stepped profile cannot be achieved, an appropriate support or protection system needs to be selected.
Never assume a trench wall will hold because it looks solid.
Why the decision matters
Unsupported trenches can kill. In June 2020, a worker died when a trench collapsed during pipe replacement work in Banstead, Surrey. Around two tonnes of soil buried him. Investigators found no trench supports, with excavated soil piled immediately beside the edge.
In September 2026, two companies received fines totalling £1.15 million, excluding costs. A contracts manager received a suspended prison sentence. What is the difference between battering and stepping?
With battering, the excavation side forms a continuous slope. The angle must suit the actual conditions; there is no universal safe angle for every site.
With stepping, the side has a series of benches. Their dimensions, the intervening faces and the overall profile need to be considered together. Dividing a tall face into shorter faces does not establish that the excavation is safe.
Both approaches require room around the excavation. Stepping is not an automatic solution where a batter will not fit, particularly beside a boundary or building. The CPA’s excavation guidance highlights the space constraints associated with both battered and stepped slopes.
When might battering be suitable?
Battering may be an option where the ground conditions allow it and there is enough space for the required slope. Examples to consider include drainage runs in open ground, soakaway pits and foundation excavations with sufficient clearance.
The job type alone does not decide the method. A garden trench may still be affected by disturbed ground, leaking services, a boundary wall or plant operating close to the edge.
Allow for the full excavation footprint, spoil storage and plant movements. Avoid choosing a steeper slope just to reduce digging or fit the available space. If the required profile cannot be accommodated, review the method and support requirements.
When might stepping be suitable?
A stepped profile may form part of an excavation arrangement where the ground and available space allow it. Bench heights and widths must suit that arrangement. There is no standard bench size in this article to copy onto a site.
Some excavations combine an upper slope or stepped profile with support lower down. The complete arrangement and installation sequence need to be considered together. Choosing a trench box for the lower working area does not, by itself, establish the safety of the excavation above it or of nearby structures.
Get advice from someone with the skills and knowledge needed for the particular excavation. This may require a temporary works designer or geotechnical specialist. What affects the choice of profile or support?
The assessment should consider:
Ground conditions: soil type, layers and previously disturbed or made ground.
Water: groundwater, rain and leaking services can change stability.
Loads near the edge: spoil, materials, vehicles and plant add pressure.
Nearby structures: digging can undermine buildings, boundary walls and other foundations.
Vibration and time: nearby activity and exposure can affect an open excavation.
Keep spoil and plant at the distances specified for the excavation arrangement. Do not rely on a face looking firm or having stood safely the day before. Protect edges against falls and prevent loose material entering the excavation. HSE excavation guidance.
What inspections are needed?
A competent person should inspect at the start of each working shift, after events that may affect stability and after rock or earth falls. Keep the required inspection records and correct unsafe conditions before work resumes.

How to record the excavation method in your RAMS
Record the method before digging starts and explain it to the people doing the work. The risk assessment and method statement should cover:
Expected ground conditions and how they will be checked.
The chosen profile or support system, with relevant drawings and instructions.
The excavation sequence and safe installation and removal of support.
Spoil storage, plant positions and controls for nearby structures and services.
Safe access, edge protection and water management.
Who inspects, what is recorded and when work must stop for reassessment.
Emergency arrangements.

Confirm the method, available space, necessary equipment and inspection arrangements. Make sure the team understands the sequence and the circumstances that require work to stop.
Battering, stepping and support systems must suit the excavation. Depth or appearance alone cannot decide the choice, and a collapse can happen without warning.
