Use the free first aid needs calculator

Available on all plans

The first aid needs calculator asks a few questions about your site and shows HSE's suggested first-aid people and kit for it. Every line links to the First-Aid Regulations or HSE's guidance. It's free and you don't need an account. You can also find it on the free tools page.

Work out your first-aid needs

  1. Open the first aid needs calculator from the free tools page

  2. Answer Do you employ anyone who will work on this site?

  3. Answer the questions that follow

An employer is asked how many workers will be on site at the same time, and about remote sites, shifts, lone workers and shared sites. A self-employed person working alone is asked fewer questions.

  4. Read the result under HSE's suggested starting point on these answers

Each line links to its source. Click Start again to clear your answers.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account to use the first aid needs calculator?

No. The calculator is free to use on our website without signing in.

Are my answers sent to The Site Book?

No. The calculator works out the result in your browser. Your answers are not sent to us or saved.

Is the result the legal minimum?

No. It shows HSE's suggested starting point from its guidance L74, which HSE says are suggestions only. Your own first-aid needs assessment decides what you provide. It is general guidance for Great Britain, not legal advice.
